Norton, America’s True Grape: Whence, and Whither?
Zinfandel is often described as America’s first and most original gift to the world of wine. Actually, it’s Norton.

Norton Wine Profile
The center of Norton production today has shifted westward into Missouri and Arkansas, where it is the signature of the wine industry in those states, and generally the top wine on most wineries’ lists.

Norton Wine 101
Norton exhibits hints of tart plums, sour cherries, or elderberries and has a spicy nose similar to Syrah. It is stronger in the front and mid-palette and has a velvety finish somewhere between a Merlot and Pinot Noir. Norton is often blended with other grapes like Tannat, Merlot, Syrah, and Petit Verdot to provide a more balanced wine.

The Crafting of Norton Wine -- A Primer
It is often said that a wine’s color, aromas, and flavors begin in the vineyard, and this is true. However, a Norton producer makes several decisions throughout the growing, harvesting, and vintning process that can affect sensory impressions in the final product. Here are a few items to look for as you taste the results of decisions made in the vineyard and the cellar.
